Montney Growth - Gas Infrastructure Repositioning Study
Ziff Energy and Gas Processing Management announce the completion of a 150+ page Multi-Client study that details an Integrated Montney
Infrastructure Development Plan. “The Montney area represents an extremely important component of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin natural gas
business; in 2020 over a third of the basin’s gas production will come from this area” said Mr. Bill Armstrong, study co-author.
The study concluded:
- overall gas production from the Montney is expected to more than double to over 5 Bcf/d by 2020. Consequently the report provides two
dozen infrastructure opportunities. An example is a new very large integrated industry processing facility in the western part of the Montney area
- the developing Montney production does not impact the infrastructure evenly across the 7 Sub Regions and the study outlines specific
repositioning (consolidation) strategies
- the Sub Region Strategies cover the full spectrum from Aggressive Growth, to Sustain, and Harvest suggesting that each region will
have different operating and management philosophies
- in the Sub Regions with Montney potential, growth overwhelms the existing gathering and processing infrastructure; the study details
opportunities to construct new processing capacity
- that specific opportunities exist to decrease capital investment by upwards of $1,000,000,000 (a billion) through coordinated industry development
- that area competitiveness could be improved by reducing operating expenses and maintenance capital by over $500,000,000 (half a billion) over the study period
- industry coordination and integration is encouraged for the development of new infrastructure and the utilization and repositioning of existing facilities
“During the half year that it took us to prepare this very detailed study, some of our initial precepts were re-assessed; the potential for Montney production
and the prize for coordinated industry development are greater than we had anticipated” said Mr. Bob Child, study co-author.
Study Background:
- develops a view of the Western Canada Natural Gas Fundamentals to define the economic landscape for Montney Growth
- forecasts yearly gas and NGL production to 2020 for the Sub Regions within the Montney area
- frames and details the gathering, processing, and take-away infrastructure (gas and NGL)
- details the commercial underpinning for integrated infrastructure development
- defines a Montney industry blue print for coordinated utilization of the existing area infrastructure along with the development of additional gathering,
processing, and transport facilities to meet the forecasted growing supply.
“The report is an important piece of work as it looks at the whole region from an independent team perspective and focuses the study effort to optimize the
entire area as if the team owned all the resources and assets; therefore, the study has great implications due to the huge cost savings that it presents” said
Mr. Bill Gwozd, study co-author.

Ziff Energy and Gas Processing Management Inc., two independent consulting firms who jointly spearheaded
the new industry analysis; this study aligns the specialised efforts of two leading Alberta based Consulting
Practices to address the challenge of the growing natural gas production in the Montney to meet the needs of
the infrastructure owners and producers in the area. Ziff Energy conducted the Business Analysis and gas/NGL
supply forecast and Gas Processing Management the Infrastructure Optimizing and Commercial analysis that assists
to understand and address this unique business challenge. The alignment of the two Consulting Practices for
these highly specialised series of multi-client studies presents a unique opportunity to combine the ‘best of
the two’ companies to frame and analyze the challenge and present collaborative workable solutions.
